Murashima, born, raised and initially educated in Japan, then decided to pursue graduate study in America. Following her attaining an MFA degree from Indiana University, she taught for many years in the art program of Rowan University at Glassboro, N.J. Her professional career has been devoted to the medium of fiber in two and three dimensions and the craft of Katazomé printmaking.
From years of practice, she has become an acknowledged master of this stencil dying-technique for creating unusual graphic prints. The procedure is described and illustrated at length in a book she published in 1994. To this day, it serves as an inspiring manual for individuals who wish to learn how to implement the process in order to realize imaginative ideas of their own.
