Esteban Vicente

Esteban Vicente, who immigrated to New York in 1936, is best known for his Abstract Expressionist paintings and collages that seem to pulsate with light. A lesser-known member of the fabled Cedar Tavern crowd that included Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning, Vicente made paintings of jagged geometric shapes that seem to hover on the surface of his canvases. For Vicente, color captured a sense of place, and in his later years the gardens surrounding his Bridgehampton, Long Island, home inspired his use of vivid color and organic shapes.

Spanish-American, 1903–2001, Turegano, Segovia Province, Spain, based in New York and Bridgehampton, New York.
