Tatsuo Miyajima is known for speculative works using the digital counter of the light emitting diode (LED) and has shown his works in major exhibitions all over the world. Miyajima uses numbers, from 1 to 9, to show continuity, connection and eternity.
Tatsuo Miyajima was born in 1957 in Tokyo. He received his Master of Fine Arts degree in painting from Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music in 1986. Miyajima began his artistic career in 1980, and ever since his invitation to show at the Aperto ’88 (the young artists’ section of the 43rd Venice Biennale), he has been one of the leading Japanese contemporary artists. In 1990, he worked in New York under a grant from the Asian Cultural Council. In 1999 Miyajima was selected to show his works for the Japanese pavilion at the Venice Biennale. Miyajima not only exhibits his artwork in galleries and museums, he also produces public artworks, such as Counter Void outside the TV Asahi Building in Roppongi Hills, Tokyo.
Selected exhibitions include: in 1983, a solo exhibition “Human Stone” at the Gallery Parergon (Tokyo); in 1990, a solo exhibition “Hiroshima Installation” at the Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art; in 1995, a solo exhibition “Running Time” at the Luhring Augustine Gallery (New York); in 1997/98, a solo exhibition, “Counter Line” at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; in 2001, “Changing Time with Changing Self” at the Gaerie Buchmann (Germany); in 2008, a solo exhibition “Tatsuo Miyajima/Art in You” at the Art Tower Mito contemporary Art Center (Tokyo).
Miyajima has said, “Art works are nothing more than devices to let people encounter, notice and be impressed by something. Artistic experiences and impressions rest inside the imagination of each human being.”
