Sol Sobel was born in New York and continues to paint and experiment on a daily basis. He received his B.A. in Philosophy from Rutgers University in 1978 where he also did graduate work in the same discipline. During high school he studied art at the Educational Alliance in New York where Louise Nevelson taught. Fiercely independent, he subscribes to the philosophy that art cannot be taught, and that an artist can find his or her own path. His faith in the untutored art process led to his “discovery” of his mother, Janet Sobel’s talent by providing her with art materials and encouraging her to express her inner voice with no formal training.
