Sharon Johnson was born on May 28, 1966, in Jackson, Mississippi, and has lived there most of her life. She began to draw as a yound child and found it gave her joy. Johnson is completely self-taught and has gone through periods where art has become her main voice. She speaks to the world through her art.
Painting comes to her as if in a dream. Sharon goes deep inside herself and presents her visions. They are often reflective of her childhood and ethnic roots. She also paints stories told to her by her grandmother. She spent a lot of time as a child in the country in Mississippi with her family. Many of her paintings show the softness and freedom of the rural environment in which she flourished. Church plays a big part in Sharon’s life and pictorial stories with a religious feeling are often manifested in her works.
