Born in Texas and raised in California, Sanabria’s life as an artist began long before receiving an MFA from the University of Maryland. An early fascination with modeling the human form and direct stone carving developed and set a form language that has influenced his work ever since. What are always present now are sinuous forms that evoke sweeping, arching feelings. Translating these feelings to his fabricated work in metal is made possible through an approach that manipulates segments of copper, bronze, or stainless steel that are cut, shaped and joined by brazing, welding, or silver-soldering, to create facets and surface textures. His experimentation with materials and techniques makes possible enlargement from pedestal to monumental scale while retaining both aesthetic quality and structural soundness.
