Pamela O’Brien is a mostly self-taught artist who was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. She currently lives in Indianapolis, Indiana, and works as an artist and social worker. Pamela has been a compulsive creator since childhood, when her love of color, drawing, writing and other modes of self expression began. Before moving to Indianapolis in 2007, Pamela has lived in New Orleans; Mexico City and Cozumel, Mexico; and Santa Fe and Taos, New Mexico. In all of these places, Pamela has sought out artistic expression in a variety of forms, including architecture, interior design, visual and performing arts, food, clothing and jewelry, among others. After earning a Master’s Degree in Social Work at Tulane University, Pamela lived in Santa Fe and Taos, where she explored the customs and art of the various Native American cultures there, and incorporated art in the therapy she provided for adolescents. After returning to her native New Orleans she worked as a therapist, using art as a form of self expression, and incorporating it into neighborhood organizations’ charter school applications. Two years after Hurricane Katrina, Pamela met the love of her life and moved to Indianapolis.
On August 29 2015, at the time of the 10th anniversary of Katrina, Pamela began a series of paintings to express feelings she could not adequately convey in words. These would be the first paintings to be included in a gallery exhibit. Since then, she continues to study art, and to work at establishing herself as an emerging professional artist. She has also been a teacher at the University of Indianapolis as well as at IUPUI, and a member of the Stutz Artists Association, the Arts Council of Indianapolis, Indianapolis Downtown Artist and Dealers Association (IDADA) and Women of Indianapolis Artists (W.O.I.A). Her work has been included in several local exhibits and events including the Stutz Artists Association; The Kurt Vonnegut Memorial Library; Pull Up a Chair, a Storytelling Variety Show; The Indiana Interchurch Center Gallery; Playground Productions; Sacred Roots Midwifery and Birth Center; Nickelplate Gallery; Hotel Tango; IU Methodist Hospital Gallery, and The Athenaeum. She is a former resident artist at Acceleration Art & Photography gallery in historic Fountain Square, where she curated the exhibit “Trees” and was the featured artist in September 2018.
