Nicholas Herrera, a self-taught artist, works primarily with carved wood and oil paints. Herrera creates powerful and unique bultos, retablos, altars, doors and mixed media pieces that refl ect the heritage of traditional santero art. Challenging the rules of this heritage with satire, humor, political commentary and non-traditional subjects and forms, Herrera’s works reveal his innermost feelings and the opposition he faced in overcoming sadness and frustration in a culture plagued with violence, drugs, alcohol and weapons.

Nick Herrera is a man of contradictions and surprises. He is an intensely religious and loyal individual putting friends and family first and finds great peace in his life through his art. Current events inspire Herrera’s interest in social commentary.

In addition to the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Herrera’s work can be found in numerous public and private collections, including the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, Museum of American Folk Art in New York, Museum of Spanish Colonial Art, Autry Western Heritage Museum, Harwood Museum, Regis University, Millicent Rogers Museum, and Museum of International Folk Art.
