Laura Owens was born in Euclid, Ohio, in 1970. She studied at California Institute of Arts, Valencia, California. Owens has had various international solo shows; Laura Owens: Paintings & Studies was exhibited at Bonnefantenmuseum, Maastricht, The Netherlands, 2007, and in 2006 the Kunsthalle Zürich, Zürich presented a show of her work which toured to the Camden Arts Centre, London. In 2006 her work was included in group shows including Essential Painting, The National Museum of Art, Osaka, Japan, and The Fluidity of Time: Selections from the MCA Collection, Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, USA. A monograph of her work was published in 2006 by the Kunsthalle Zürich. She lives and works in Los Angeles.
Los Angeles-based artist Laura Owens’ work blends abstract and representational imagery. Her work draws inspiration from English embroidery, Chinese and Japanese landscape painting, European and American modernism, and her own photography, often creating collages and fine line drawings. She acknowledges film, computer, and television imagery among her influences. Her paintings are often grandly scaled, address color and vary in the application of paint to the canvas.
