Born in Takoradi in Ghana’s Western Region, Kobina Nyarko obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Industrial Art from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in 2003. Prior to University, he participated in the First National Exhibition of Unknown Artists, organized by Ghana’s National Commission on Culture in 1988, and the “Feeling Africa with Us” exhibition at the Minsk Art Gallery in Minsk, Belarus, in 2011. He has also shown work in Atlanta, Georgia; San Diego, California; London; Brussels; Johannesburg; and Denmark.
Much of Nyarko’s work explores the symbolism of fish displayed in a signature abstract form among mesmerizing schools of fish. His work is considered to be illustrative of 3rd generation Ghanaian artists who freely express themselves as artists in a modern world without succumbing to restrictive notions of African art. Currently, Nyarko’s paintings can be found in public and private venues, such as the American Embassy, the Canadian Embassy, and the Danish High Commission, and Russian and South African Embassies in Ghana.
Kobina Nyarko has taught art in various high schools and through internships in is his studio. He is a member of the Foundation for Contemporary Art in Ghana. Beyond his studio, Kobina paints wall murals and large-scale canvases.
