Kay WalkingStick earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting in 1959 from Beaver College of Arcadia University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1973 she was awarded a Danforth Foundation Graduate Fellowship for Women to attend Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, New York, where she earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in 1975. During her forty year career she has had thirty-three one person shows in venues across the United States, as well as countless group exhibitions in the U.S., Canada, and Europe. Many of her paintings are based on sketches made during teaching and lecturing assignments in the American Southwest and in Italy.

WalkingStick is a member of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma. Her honors include a 2003 “Distinguished Native American Fine Artist” award from the Eiteljorg Museum, Indianapolis, Indiana; being named honoree of The Women’s Caucus for Art at their National Honors Award for Achievement in the Arts; a 1995 Joan Mitchell Award in painting; a 1991 Richard A. Florsheim Art Fund Award; and a 1983 grant in painting from the National Endowment for the Arts. Her works can be seen in thirty-six museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City; the Denver Art Museum, Colorado; the Albright Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, New York; the National Museum of the American Indian, Washington, D.C.; and the National Museum of Israel, Jerusalem.

WalkingStick’s work has been published in many books and journals including H.R. Jansons’s History of Art, 5th and 6th editions, and David Penney’s Native American Art Masterpieces. She is a Professor Emerita at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, and a trustee at the Montclair Art Museum in Montclair, New Jersey. She lives and paints in Jackson Heights, Queens with the artist, Dirk Bach.
