After receiving her degree in Art from the University of Alabama, Kathleen continued her studies at the Scuola Libera del Nudo in Rome and Palermo, Italy. Then, traveling with her diplomat husband for over twenty years in Africa and the Middle East, she was charmed by new people, places, and rhythms of everyday life. Whether painting portraits, market scenes or cityscapes her paintings catch the play of light and shadow. Portraits capture that instant of a fleeting expression in the fluidity and freshness of watercolor.
Recently she has returned to printmaking to best capture the rich texture and brilliant colors of African clothing. Stafford’s paintings and prints have been acquired by American and foreign embassies, centers of art and culture, and private collectors around the world.
