Portrait painter, John Cranch spent time in Italy from 1830 to 1834, and worked in New York City in 1838-39. Following he spent time in Cincinnati from 1839 to 1844, returned to New York City from 1848 to 1854 and from at least 1857 to 1878 he was in Washington DC.
He was the older brother of painter, Christopher Pearse Cranch.
