Of her photography Jeane Umbreit writes: “as simultaneously spectator and creator, I witness and capture the perspective, moment, or subject which makes the real surreal.” In the flowing lines of the cityscape of Peabody, Rooftop the viewer can see what Umbreit describes “in realizing a photograph, I search for a meaning …to connect with it a deep and personal level of consciousness.” In Pyramid, she pays homage to the city’s Egyptian namesake, Memphis.
Umbreit was born in 1953 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Currently, she lives and works in Memphis, Tennessee. In 1988 she was commissioned to create works for the Memphis/Shelby County Room of the Public Library Building in Memphis. Her works are in public collections, including the Arkansas Arts Center, Little Rock;
the Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris, France; the Cincinnati Museum of Art, Ohio; the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, Tennessee; the New Orleans Museum of Art,
Louisiana; the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, California; and the Southeast Museum of Photography, Daytona Beach, Florida.
