Jarvis Grant is a photographer and educator based in Washington, DC since 1972. His commercial clients include Coca-Cola, Burson-Marsteller, McCann-Erikson, Roberts & Raymond Associates, Dix & Eaton, American Cancer Society, Smithsonian Press, Southwest Airlines, HBO, and Sony Music. Magazine assignments include Black Enterprise, Runners World, Muscle & Fitness, Advertising Age, House Beautiful, Sculpture Magazine and The Washington Post Sunday Magazine, and was included in the 2001 & 2005 Portfolio Issue of Graphic Design magazine.
The recipient of DC Commission of the Arts & Humanities 1994 & 1995 Photography Fellowships and Small Projects Grants in 1998, 1999, & 2003. In 2001, Jarvis was awarded an Arts Educator Fellowship from the Surdna Foundation, received the Integrated Arts & Technology Grant from the DC Commission of the Arts & Humanities & National Endowment of the Arts. Jarvis was awarded, Honorable Mention in the Fine Art Professional Landscape category by International Photography Awards, Photographer of the Year 2005 competition, and the Portfolios.com 2006, International Design Merit Award for Digital Photography. In 2007, he received the PX3 Prix de la Photographie Paris Honorable Mention Professional Landscape Award. And again in 2008 he recieved the Silver Metal for a Photographic Series, the Merit Award for Photography Self Pormotion, and the Merit Award for Unpublished Photographic Art in the Portfolios.com 2008, International Design Contest.
His involvement with digital imaging and technology includes Community Leader for America Online’s Art/Photography Teaching Forum, membership in the National Association of Photoshop Professionals, Professional Photographers of America, Advertising Photographers of America, Blue Earth Alliance, Editorial Photographers, and speaker at national trade conferences.
Jarvis is a featured artist in several books, Collecting Limited Edition Prints: Contemporary African American Printmakers, by Dennis L. Forbes, Seeing Jazz: Artist & Writers On Jazz, edited by Elizabeth Goldson for the Smithsonian Institutionand, and In Our Own Image: Treasured African-American Tradition, Journeys, and Icons by Patrick Ross & Karen Pugh, to name a few.
His photographs are represented in the collections of, The Center for Fine Art Photography, Museum of Contemporary Art, Fort Collins, Colorado; the DC Commission of the Arts & Humanities, Art Bank, Images of Washington; the United States Department of State, Art in Embassies; and the University of Arizona, Center for Creative Photography. Director of Howard University’s Department of Art, BFA Photography program, from 1979 until 1993. He is currently, instructor with the Museum Studies & Visual Arts Departments at the Ellington School of the Arts in Washington, DC. He teaches photography, digital imaging & design, cultural studies, and museum research methodology.
