Enrique Cay’s work documents the richness and intangibility of indigenous culture; the vision of a local man in which he rescues his identity from within the elements forming and transcending it. He translates the deep roots of national traditions and customs, recording both the shapes of daily life and the spirits that come along with them. His art is full of fantastical images and has deep spiritual roots, inherited from his family and social environment.
A self-taught artist from Sumpango, Sacatepéquez, Cay reflects on both his early experience with kites and their energy charges connecting him to the skies and children’s games among merry-go-rounds, in which cycles of life are raised and transported.
