Darren Waterston

DARREN WATERSTON was born in California in 1965 and received his BFA at the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles. He continued his training in Germany studying painting at the Academie der Kunst in Berlin and the Fachhochschule fur Kunst in Munster. Today, Waterston lives and works out of his studio in San Francisco, CA.

Waterston’s technique artfully layers unique organic forms with abstract elements to create alluring scapes full of visceral physicality. The lush surfaces and masterfully rendered detail of Waterston’s paintings are at once seductive and confounding as they evoke a sense of place without geographic reference.

Waterston’s work has been exhibited internationally and is included in many permanent collections such as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, CA; Oakland Museum of California; the de Young Museum, San Francisco, CA; the Crocker Art Museum, Sacramento, CA; and the Portland Art Museum, Portland, OR.
