Catharine Carter is a native of Chapel Hill and grew up in an artistic family. She graduated from UNC with a Bachelor of Fine Arts majoring in painting and Intaglio printing. After an introductory photography course in her freshman year, she worked as a darkroom technician at UNC photo lab and was a special event photographer for the University until graduation.
In 1975, Catharine joined the Professional Photographers of North Carolina and began her career photographing brides, weddings, families, and University events. She is now exclusively a portrait photographer and especially enjoys working with children. At her home/studio/garden on historic Ransom Street in Chapel Hill, NC she works in color and B&W with medium-format cameras.
Catharine has won both state and national photographic awards for images that appear in the book Great Unknowns and in the Professional Photographers of America (PPA) Showcase books. Her photographs of the Triangle Youth Ballet were the feature cover story in the PPA national magazine. Catharine also produced the popular “Doors of Chapel Hill” poster for a highly successful 1994 fundraising initiative for the Chapel Hill Preservation Society. Following a photographic trip to Costa Rica in 2003 she was invited to show her black and white prints at the Costa Rican Embassy in Washington D.C. and after three years of documenting the “Transformation of Memorial Hall” on the UNC campus Catharine’s images were used in the limited edition lithograph folios given as gifts for the major donors to the Hall at the opening. Catharine continues show her art photography in both group shows and solo exhibits.
Throughout her career she has continued to develop her craft through frequent professional workshops with world-class photographers. Catharine’s love of black and white images and the traditional silver printing process, even in this age of digital imagery, has led her to continue to explore traditional and alternative printing processes in photography and has inspired her to undertake some of her most recent creative projects.
