Barbara Wilk, an artist who works in a variety of media, lives and makes art in Westport, Connecticut and Santa Fe, New Mexico. She received her art training at Smith College, The University of Bridgeport, the Art Students’ League in New York, the Fernard Leger Atelier in Paris and the Camden Institute in London. She has taught at Fairfield University, Housatonic Community College, Norwalk Community College, the University of Connecticut and the Brookfield Craft Center.
Ms. Wilk is a Master Teaching Artist for the CT Commission on the Arts and is President of the CT Chapter of the Women’s Caucus for the Arts, and is an exhibiting member of SAGA, The Westport Arts Center, The Silvermine Guild Arts Center and SLMM. She is a Guggenheim Fellow and has received grants from the CT Commission on the Arts and the CT Council on the Humanities and was the administrator of a CETA Arts Project as well as President of the Westport-Weston Arts Council. Ms. Wilk, who received a President’s Volunteer Action Award, has shown her art for many years in juried shows throughout the United States and Europe as well as in solo shows in Connecticut, New York, New Mexico and California. She has also made five prize-winning animated films that are in museum and school collections and is in the process of making a documentary film.
“My sculpture and paintings are strongly influenced by images of ancient art, particularly the cave art in Africa, France and Spain as well as the art of Native Americans. My work has always derived from the trips I have taken each year to foreign sites and museums. Recently, most of my work has been in the field of print-making. I have experimenting with water-based monoprints, chine colle, photo-transfers and oil-based monoprints on canvas, as well as multi-media works.”
