Artist’s Statement
I have been working with fabrics and fibers almost all of my life, from sewing as a child, to weaving classes in college, to teaching Adult Education courses in Macramé in the ‘70s. However, it was my discovery of the “Art Quilt” in the late ‘80s, where I could combine my lifetime love of sewing and fabrics with my education in art and design that led to my current passion.
I like to call what I do as “FABRICations” as I use various surface design techniques to create my own fabrics, using photography, computer imaging, painting, drawing, dying, sewing, and quilting. Using plain white untreated cotton or sheer silk organza fabrics, I draw on the fabric with fabric inks; paint on them with inks or fabric paints; hand-dye the fabrics; and/or print on the fabric. With printing, I use photographs or images that I scan into my computer, digitally manipulated, sectioned, and then print onto cotton fabrics that I then sew together. Most of the images are my original photographs. In many of my pieces, I have been adding an additional layer of sheer silk organza material, on which I have drawn and/or painted images. The sheer organza is then layered over a background printed or painted image. I enjoy experimenting to create innovative designs and techniques.
