Andrew Martin was an inspiration to students at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro, for many years. His work is based on a life-long fascination with color, share, an dline, an dhe attempted to minimize political, psychological, or spiritual elements in his work, though he knew these elements existed. “When I paint,” Martin said, “I consciously organize intervals, colors, and rhythms in a way that captures the intensity of a lived experience. But I am also aware that the painting is the outcome of a reciprocal relationship being developed between my personal experience and the cultural and historical context that largely defines and determines its terms. Regardless of its theme or impulse, a painting ultimately is a statement about the nature and possibilities of painting.”
