Born in Dayton, Ohio, Jan Serr grew up in Arizona and Wisconsin, and earned her Bachelor of Arts degree and a Master’s of Fine Arts Degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Over the course of her distinguished career, she has exhibited her work both nationally and internationally. Additionally, her paintings and prints are in numerous public and museum collections, including those of the Milwaukee Art Museum; the Haggerty Museum of Art, Marquette University, Milwaukee, Wisconsin; the Ontario Museum of Art, Toronto, Canada; and the Nickle Arts Museum, University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. She lived in Canada for seven years, and currently lives with her husband John Shannon in Milwaukee.
Jan Serr’s subjects include landscape, still life, and the figure, with trees being one of the continuous themes in her art. She generally works on a series of paintings and prints which share a common subject or theme, but which are expressed in different media. She is known for her rich use of color and strong composition.
