Duhirwe Rushemeza

Duhirwe Rushemeza is a young woman who creates and administers art related workshops for kids through the Rush Philanthropic Art Foundation and most recently The Studio Museum of Harlem – both in New York City.

For the last eight years she created highly methodical portrayals of strong Rwandan children survivors. Her linocut and woodcuts have been collected by people of all walks of life – from the president of a major, world renowned museum – to a well known Hollywood actor. The Art in Embassies program of the U.S government has recently purchased her art to be displayed in the new U.S Embassy in Kigali. The Rwandan Embassy in Washington, DC has also recently acquired some of her linocuts.

In 2000 she started an organization called Abana bacu to aid Rwandan orphans through sales of her works. She has continued this work by organizing fundraising events with Friends of Rwanda, most recently holding two successful art auctions to benefit the first Public Library in Rwanda.

Her Master’s thesis is dedicated to creating a Cross Cultural Exchange, Video-Based Art Program for children in under-resourced communities.
