The concerns of my work pertain in large part to the figure and to a visual narrative that hinges on memory, fantasy, and literary references. Influenced by the work of writers such as Haruki Murakami, Julio Cortazar, and Jorges Borges, I depict characters engaged in the absurd and enigmatic; scenarios imbued with a sense of longing and a search for the transcendent moment or experience. I embrace improvisation through a working process that utilizes versatile approaches in collage, painting, and stitching. Defined as a chance event or possibility, contingency illustrates the idea that “the agile mind is pleased to find what it is not looking for.” Thus, japanese woodcuts, botanical references, female figures decontextualized from fashion magazines, and travel photographs serve as source material where meaning and logic can be subverted and rearranged to expose moments of paradox and contradiction.
