Philippine-born and Washington, DC-based artist Joey P. Mánlapaz came to the United States as a young teen and earned her MFA from the George Washington University. Mánlapaz has received numerous accolades for her unique form of painterly photorealism inspired by New York artists Tom Blackwell and Richard Estes, but with a more painterly and deep psychological sensitivity reminiscent of Edward Hopper.
Mánlapaz’s paintings were exhibited in 2010 at the Miami Red Dot Art Fair, in 2007 at the London Bridge Art Fair and in 2003; she received a coveted National Book Festival painting commission from the U.S. Library of Congress and First Lady Laura Bush. Her paintings are in the collections of the U.S. State Department, U.S. Library of Congress, U.S. Navy, Arnold & Porter LLP, Deloitte & Touche LLP, ING Clarion, MetLife, White & Case LLP, and Bill Cosby, among others.
She lives and maintains a studio in historic Capitol Hill and is faculty member at the Corcoran College of Art and Design.
