California native, Carolyn Lord was introduced to the “California Regionalist Watercolor” plein air tradition from James Green, while attending Principia College in Illinois, 1974-8. During and after college, she attended painting workshops with Millard Sheets, Rex Brandt, George Post, Milford Zornes and Robert E. Wood; absorbing what they had to offer, then redefining it to fit her own purposes. Taking advantage of watercolor’s extreme portability, Carolyn has traveled abroad to Brazil, Italy, Denmark, England, the Virgin Islands, and regionally to Utah and Southern California. Travel is nice, yet there is plenty to paint in and near her home town of Livermore with its landscape, architecture, and gardens, expressed through her idiosyncratic choice of subject, design, and color.
When Carolyn was 26, her work was profiled on the “Watercolor Page” in American Artist Magazine, followed by articles in U.S. Art, Watercolor, and Watercolor Magic magazines. Included in these articles are her systematic thought process of painting, unconventional use of brushes, painting trips, figure and portraiture work, her role in organizing a paint-out protest, and personal career observations. She is an Artist Member of the California Art Club, and a Signature Member of the National Watercolor Society.
Watercolor painting defines her career, but is not the full extent of it: Carolyn has a continuing interest in figure and portraiture painting, most recently working in oil; studied at the San Francisco Tapestry Workshop under Pierre Larochette; designed posters for the Livermore Valley Opera; designed and painted glazed ceramic tile for a fireplace and a kitchen installation; taught art to middle school boys at the Pacific Boychoir Academy in Oakland. She enjoys architectural history, quilts and embroiders on occasion, and relishes painting the trees and flowers that grow in her own garden.
