In 1963, at age sixty-eight, after hid retirement, Sanford Darling began painting small scenes of places he had visited on two trips around the world.
He put the paintings up in his house on Rancheria Street in Santa Barbara, California but very soon he ran out of room. So he nailed his work to the outside of the house and went right on painting for ten years on the screens, walls, eaves, doors, refrigerator, chairs, ceilings and rugs.
The house’s paintings are no longer extant, having been removed and sold after the artist’s death in 1973.
